Accra Mayor, Kpakpo Announces A Change In Closing Time For The National Clean-Up Day Exercise

According to a report by Citi FM today being Saturday, November 7, 2026, Accra Mayor Michael Kpakpo Allotey has announced a revision to the closing time for the National Clean-up Day exercise, reducing the scheduled time from 12 noon to 10 a.m.

The adjustment is aimed at allowing traders at the Accra Central Market to return to their businesses earlier after completing cleaning activities within their surroundings.

The decision is expected to provide some relief to market women, shop owners and other traders who participate in the monthly sanitation exercise while also depending on their daily commercial activities for their livelihoods.

Under the revised arrangement, participants will now be expected to conclude the clean-up exercise by 10 a.m., instead of the previously announced 12 noon deadline.

This means traders and other participants will have additional time to resume their normal business activities after carrying out their sanitation responsibilities.

The Accra Central Market is one of the major commercial centres in the capital, attracting large numbers of traders, customers and other business operators every day.

Consequently, sanitation exercises within the market can temporarily affect commercial activities, making it important to strike a balance between maintaining cleanliness and allowing businesses to operate.

The change in the closing time is therefore expected to make participation in the exercise more convenient for traders, particularly those who rely on daily sales to support themselves and their families.

The National Clean-up Day initiative is intended to encourage residents, traders and other stakeholders to take responsibility for maintaining clean surroundings. Participants are expected to remove accumulated rubbish, clear their immediate environments and ensure that public spaces are properly maintained.

The mayor’s announcement also reinforces the importance of cooperation between local authorities and business operators in addressing sanitation challenges in Accra.

By bringing the exercise to an end at 10 a.m., the authorities hope traders will be able to complete their cleaning duties and reopen their businesses without experiencing an unnecessarily lengthy disruption.

The adjustment is expected to support the continued participation of market traders in sanitation activities while ensuring that commercial operations can resume earlier.
