MK Party Sweeps Richmond, Winning Every Ward and Leaving the ANC Without a Seat

The uMkhonto weSizwe Party (MK Party) has won all nine wards in the Richmond local municipality elections and now takes full control of the council. The result is a heavy blow to the African National Congress (ANC), which had run the area until now.

With the final results in, the MK Party will govern the municipality on its own, which ends years of ANC dominance in Richmond. As the results came through, MK Party supporters poured into the streets to celebrate. Crowds chanted the party’s well-known slogan, “Gwaza mkhonto Gwaza!” (Stab, spear, stab!), and many described the win as a sign that voters are turning away from the ANC in large numbers.

Political analysts say the clean sweep shows how fast the MK Party is growing and how well it is taking over areas that were once seen as ANC strongholds. Because the party won every ward, the ANC has no seats from the ward votes and will have to rethink how it approaches the area.

For the ANC, the loss is especially painful because Richmond was regarded as one of its safer areas. The party now faces a hard fight to win back voters while the MK Party keeps building support on the ground. Residents who voted for the MK Party say they want change and believe the new leadership will listen more closely to their concerns.

The win gives the MK Party its first full municipality in KwaZulu-Natal. Party members have called it a historic moment and a strong message to other areas where votes are still being counted. Celebrations went on late into the night, and many people see the result as a sign that the political map in the province is changing quickly.

The ANC has not yet given a detailed response, but the result is expected to put pressure on the party’s leadership in the region. For now, the MK Party is enjoying the benefits of its victory, and its supporters are confident that more wins could follow as results continue to come in across the country.
