Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park Wants Big Six Removed From Ghanaian Banknotes
The management of the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park has called on the Bank of Ghana (BoG) to consider replacing the image of the Big Six featured on selected Ghanaian banknotes with a photograph of Ghana’s Independence Declaration.
The proposal, which seeks to reshape how the country’s historical identity and independence struggle are represented on its currency, has sparked an important conversation about national heritage, historical recognition and the symbols Ghana chooses to celebrate.
According to the management of the memorial park, the Independence Declaration represents a significant moment in Ghana’s history and deserves greater prominence in the country’s national identity, particularly on banknotes that circulate daily among millions of citizens.
The management believes that featuring the historic declaration on selected denominations would serve as a powerful reminder of the country’s journey towards independence and the sacrifices made to secure freedom from colonial rule.
The request also highlights the importance of using national currency as a platform for preserving and promoting Ghana’s historical achievements. Beyond its economic value, the cedi carries images and symbols that reflect the country’s identity, culture and political history.
The Big Six, whose photographs currently appear on selected banknotes, remain important figures in Ghana’s struggle for independence.
Their contributions to the country’s political development and the eventual attainment of self-government have earned them a lasting place in national history.
However, the memorial park’s proposal suggests that the historic document declaring Ghana’s independence could also deserve a place among the country’s most recognisable national symbols.
The Independence Declaration represents the culmination of years of political agitation, nationalist mobilisation and determination by Ghanaians to gain freedom from British colonial administration.
The management is therefore urging the Bank of Ghana to give serious consideration to the proposal as part of efforts to strengthen historical awareness and preserve the country’s collective memory.
Although the proposal does not necessarily diminish the contributions of the Big Six, it raises questions about how Ghana can broaden the representation of its independence history through its currency.
If considered by the central bank, the proposed change could introduce a new dimension to the historical imagery displayed on Ghanaian banknotes.
Ultimately, the appeal underscores the need to ensure that future generations continue to appreciate the events, personalities and historic documents that shaped Ghana’s independence and national identity.
