Very disappointing to hear such a statement coming from a whole legend like Maame Dokono – Bongo

Social media commentator Bongo Ideas has criticised veteran Ghanaian actress Grace Omaboe, widely known as Maame Dokono, over remarks she reportedly made about the death of comedian and television presenter Kwame Dzokoto. In a Facebook post, Bongo Ideas described her comments as insensitive, inappropriate and unsupported by scientific evidence.

The controversy emerged after Maame Dokono allegedly suggested that Dzokoto’s health complications might have been linked to his habit of eating different local dishes while hosting his popular television programme, Edziban. She reportedly claimed that he developed health problems because he consumed too much food during the show and did not need to taste every dish presented.

Reacting to the statement, Bongo Ideas expressed disappointment that someone with Maame Dokono’s experience and reputation in the entertainment industry would make such remarks following the death of a colleague. He questioned why she did not raise those concerns while Dzokoto was still alive, rather than making such claims after his passing.

He also challenged the basis of linking the deceased’s health problems to his television programme, questioning whether Edziban was even broadcast every day. According to him, making assumptions about someone’s medical condition without credible evidence is unnecessary and disrespectful, especially when the individual concerned is no longer alive to respond.

Bongo Ideas maintained that people should allow the late entertainer to rest in peace instead of creating discussions around unconfirmed explanations for his death. He suggested that such comments could cause unnecessary distress to the family and friends of the deceased.

Kwame Dzokoto was widely celebrated as a comedian, television presenter and politician. His programme, Edziban, gained recognition for showcasing Ghanaian cuisine and introducing viewers to traditional meals from different parts of the country. His death has generated widespread mourning, with colleagues, fans and other public figures sharing tributes in his honour.

The disagreement has also renewed discussions about responsible public commentary within Ghana’s entertainment industry. Bongo Ideas’ position is that public figures should exercise caution when discussing the deaths of colleagues, particularly when their statements involve medical explanations that have not been confirmed by reliable sources.

His criticism has attracted mixed reactions on social media. While some users agree that Maame Dokono’s comments were unnecessary during a period of mourning, others believe she may have been expressing genuine concern about the health implications of excessive food consumption.

Nevertheless, the incident has highlighted the importance of empathy, sensitivity and responsible communication when addressing the circumstances surrounding someone’s death.
