Here’s the Historic Photograph Kwame Nkrumah Park Wants on Ghana’s Banknotes
The Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park has proposed the replacement of the Big Six photograph on selected Ghanaian banknotes with the historic image of Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah declaring the country’s independence on March 6, 1957.
The proposal, announced in a statement on Friday, November 6, 2026, seeks to expand the historical representation on Ghana’s currency by highlighting other significant events that have shaped the country’s history.
According to the Park’s management, the initiative is in line with the Bank of Ghana’s proposed introduction of a Heritage Series of banknotes.
The management acknowledged the historical importance of the Big Six, whose images currently appear on almost all Ghanaian banknotes in recognition of their contributions to the country’s independence struggle.
However, it believes the proposed currency series offers an opportunity to recognise other important personalities and defining moments in Ghana’s history without diminishing the contributions of the six prominent nationalists.
The Park noted that banknotes serve purposes beyond financial transactions, providing an opportunity for countries to showcase their cultural identity, historical achievements and national heritage.
It believes the iconic photograph of Dr Nkrumah announcing Ghana’s independence would be an appropriate addition to the country’s currency, given its significance to the nation’s freedom, sovereignty and identity.
The photograph captures a historic moment on March 6, 1957, when Dr Nkrumah declared Ghana’s independence from British colonial rule, marking the country’s emergence as a sovereign nation.
The event represented the culmination of years of struggle for self-government and became a defining milestone in the broader African liberation movement.
The Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park described the attainment of independence as one of the most significant events in Ghana’s history, arguing that the moment deserves greater recognition in the country’s national symbols.
Management further indicated that the proposal would carry particular significance as Ghana prepares to mark the 70th anniversary of its independence in 2027.
It believes featuring the historic photograph on selected banknotes would provide a lasting tribute to the event that established modern Ghana as an independent state.
The Park also noted that the proposed Heritage Series presents an opportunity for the country to celebrate influential personalities, historic events and major milestones that have contributed to its development.
Management maintained that incorporating the independence declaration photograph would strengthen the historical value of Ghana’s currency and ensure that future generations remain connected to one of the most important moments in the country’s history.
