Vim Lady Breaks Silence on Sam George’s Public Confrontation With Military Officer
Media personality Afia Pokua, popularly known as Vim Lady, has raised concerns about Communications Minister Samuel Nartey George’s recent confrontation with a military officer, warning that the way public officials handle disagreements with the military could create serious problems for Ghana’s democracy.
Her warning comes after Sam George publicly criticised a military officer following a security operation in his Ningo-Prampram constituency. The minister accused some soldiers of mistreating residents and taking trucks belonging to people in the area without proper authority.
The issue has attracted attention because of the sensitive relationship between civilian authorities and the security services in Ghana. Vim Lady’s warning about a possible coup has added another serious dimension to the discussion.
The controversy began after a joint military and police operation in the constituency. Some residents and truck drivers reportedly complained that soldiers had assaulted people and seized their vehicles during the operation.
Sam George, who is also the Member of Parliament for Ningo-Prampram, reacted strongly in a viral video. He directly addressed a military officer identified as Lieutenant Albert Goh, accused him of misconduct and called on the Chief of Defence Staff to remove him from the Armed Forces.
The minister also disclosed the officer’s service number and warned that soldiers who returned to mistreat residents would face the consequences.
His comments attracted criticism from people who felt that, regardless of what the soldiers may have done, a government minister should be careful about publicly confronting a serving military officer.
One of those who criticised his approach was Twumasi Barimah, a Ghana Armed Forces physical training instructor popularly known as Commander General. He argued that Sam George should have first established the details of the military operation before making such strong public statements.
However, Sam George later met the Defence Minister, the Chief of Defence Staff and the three service commanders to discuss the matter. He explained that his comments were not intended as an attack on the Ghana Armed Forces but were directed at the conduct of the personnel involved.
He also welcomed the military leadership’s commitment to investigate the incident and said the findings should be made public.
Vim Lady’s intervention brings attention to a difficult question: how should elected officials respond when soldiers are accused of mistreating civilians? While politicians have a duty to defend the people they represent, the military must also operate within the law and respect the rights of citizens.
Ghana has experienced military coups in its history, making any warning about a possible return to military rule a serious matter. However, there is no evidence in the reports reviewed that a coup is being planned or that the current disagreement has reached that stage.
