Face of Freedom: Why Ghana’s Currency Could Soon Tell a Different Story

Accra, Ghana — If the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park gets its way, the money in your pocket is about to get a lot more emotional. In a bold move that has sparked nationwide conversation, the Memorial Park has officially asked the Bank of Ghana to shake up the visual identity of the Cedi by replacing the familiar “Big Six” portrait on selected banknotes with the electrifying photograph of Ghana’s Independence Declaration

The timing is no accident. As Ghana gears up to celebrate its 70th Independence Anniversary in 2027, and with the Bank of Ghana rolling out its new “Heritage Series” of notes, the Park argues that the current currency is telling only half the story . While the Big Six—Nkrumah, Danquah, Ako-Adjei, Obetsebi-Lamptey, Ofori Atta, and Akufo-Addo—are revered founding fathers, the Park’s Acting Executive Director, Dr. Collins Rawlings Nunyonameh, believes the visual of Nkrumah declaring freedom on March 6, 1957, captures the culmination of that struggle

The proposal strikes a chord because it shifts the narrative from the architects of independence to the moment of liberation itself. “Our currency should not merely facilitate transactions; it should tell our national story,” the statement argued, noting that the declaration photo is not just a Ghanaian icon but a beacon for the entire African liberation movement . The Park is careful to clarify that this isn’t an erasure of the Big Six, but rather an expansion of the national canvas—a way to ensure that the sheer ecstasy and sovereignty of that mid-century dawn are visible to every market woman, student, and trader who handles a cedi note

While the Bank of Ghana has yet to issue a formal response, the proposal has already ignited a fascinating debate about memory and money. After all, if a picture is worth a thousand words, placing the birth of a nation onto its currency might just be the most powerful statement of all.
