Chelsea Teenager, 19, Surprises with International Call-Up from Former Blues Manager Despite Premier League Inexperience

November 6, 2026 sportnow CHELSEA academy prospect Genesis Antwi has received a surprising first call-up to the Sweden national team after catching the eye of former Chelsea manager Graham Potter, despite not having played in the Premier League yet.

At just 19 years old, Antwi joined Chelsea at the age of 11 when he relocated to London from his hometown of Stockholm. He has consistently stood out in the club’s academy and made his senior debut in 2025.

The full-back has only made two appearances for the first team, both in the Conference League against Copenhagen and Swedish team Djurgarden during the 2024/25 season.

After returning to the youth setup at Chelsea last season, the defender was loaned to sister club Strasbourg in the summer.

Antwi has dramatically improved his performance under Hugo Oliveira’s guidance, having started in eight of the ten matches for the French club this season.

The right-back’s skill set and versatility, particularly his ability to also play on the left side of defense, have caught the attention of Sweden manager Potter.

The experienced 51-year-old manager also mentioned that he received positive feedback about Antwi from his connections at Chelsea.

Potter stated: “Genesis has performed well with the Under-21 national team as well, and with Emil Holm out due to injury, I opted for Felix Beijmo as the more experienced alternative.

“Then we have Genesis, who brings unique qualities and speed to the team. I’ve had discussions with people at Chelsea who hold him in high regard.”

Potter became the Sweden manager after a successful seven-year tenure with Ostersund, before moving back to the UK in 2018.

After a successful season with Swansea in the Championship, he moved to Brighton, where his impressive three-year spell led to a major signing with Chelsea.

However, Potter only lasted seven months at Stamford Bridge and following a disappointing nine-month period at West Ham, he returned to Sweden, where he seems to have regained his previous excellence.

Antwi has accumulated 28 caps across various youth levels for his national team and could be set to make his senior debut in the upcoming Nations League matches against Bosnia & Herzegovina and Poland.
