WATCH: Helen Zille Clarifies Her Stand On Undocumented Immigrants In South Africa

Democratic Alliance (DA) Federal Chairperson Helen Zille has outlined a firm position on illegal immigration in South Africa, making it clear that foreign nationals who are in the country without legal documentation should either regularise their status through the proper channels or leave the country.

Zille’s position has attracted considerable public attention amid growing national debates about immigration, border security, unemployment and pressure on public services.

Contrary to claims that she supports allowing undocumented immigrants to remain in South Africa without restrictions, Zille has maintained that immigration laws must be respected and consistently enforced.

In previous public statements, she acknowledged that certain foreign nationals, including Zimbabwe Exemption Permit holders, should have an opportunity to regularise their stay. She argued that people who contribute positively to the South African economy should be able to apply for lawful status through an efficient immigration system.

However, her more recent comments have taken a tougher tone.

In March 2026, Zille called for illegal foreign nationals to be arrested, prosecuted and deported, particularly those involved in organised criminal activities. She also linked illegal immigration to challenges surrounding hijacked buildings and criminal syndicates in Johannesburg.

She insisted that people wishing to live and work in South Africa must do so legally.

During a June 2026 interview, Zille again clarified the DA’s position, saying foreign nationals who are legally in the country must have their rights protected, while those without legal status must follow the appropriate legal processes.

She also rejected violence against foreign nationals, warning that immigration concerns should never become an excuse for intimidation or xenophobic attacks.

The DA’s official immigration policy similarly supports stronger border security, enforcement of the Immigration Act, improved immigration administration and the protection of human rights.

Essentially, Zille’s position is not that all undocumented immigrants should automatically be granted permanent legal status. Rather, she supports allowing lawful regularisation where appropriate while insisting that those who cannot obtain legal status must leave South Africa through established procedures.

Her stance reflects an approach that combines stricter immigration enforcement with legal pathways for eligible foreign nationals.

The debate over immigration is expected to remain a major political issue as South Africa continues to grapple with border management, economic pressures and public concerns about illegal immigration.
