EFF Tshwane Mayoral Candidate Blames Low Voter Turnout For Party’s Decline

Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) Tshwane mayoral candidate Omphile Maotwe has attributed part of the party’s declining electoral support in the 2026 Local Government Elections to low voter turnout.

Maotwe believes that voter fatigue may have contributed to the reduced support for the party, suggesting that the frequency of elections in South Africa places an increasing burden on voters.

The EFF candidate has called for a significant change to the country’s electoral schedule, proposing that local government, provincial and national elections be conducted simultaneously every five years.

According to Maotwe, holding the three elections at the same time could help address voter exhaustion and potentially encourage greater participation in the democratic process.

Her proposal comes as political parties assess their performance following the 2026 municipal elections, with voter turnout and shifting political loyalties emerging as important factors in the results.

The EFF, which has experienced challenges in maintaining its electoral support, is expected to evaluate its campaign strategies and consider measures to reconnect with voters.

Maotwe’s comments have also reignited discussions about the country’s electoral system and whether synchronising elections could improve participation and reduce the costs associated with conducting separate polls.

However, the proposal would require broader political consideration and possible legislative changes before it could be implemented.
