Why the Linda Mwananchi Brigade Is Rushing to Kapenguria to Rescue the Arrested Deputy Speaker

Trans Nzoia County Deputy Speaker Mwale Obed Mahanga has been arrested following allegations of a plot to obstruct President William Ruto’s motorcade. The incident reportedly took place during the President’s official tour of Kitale on Friday, October 16.

Mahanga, who also serves as the Member of County Assembly (MCA) for Matisi Ward, spent the night in police custody at the Kapenguria Police Station.

The arrest was officially confirmed by Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya. The governor revealed that Mahanga faces additional charges, including accusations of sponsoring individuals to disrupt Kenya Kwanza political rallies within the county.

Natembeya, who has been locked in a fierce political feud with the Head of State, indicated that the MCA is scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday, November 3, at 9:00 AM.

Following the arrest, a large crowd of supporters and a legal team flooded the police station to demand his immediate release. Mahanga will be represented in court by a team of volunteer lawyers associated with the Linda Mwananchi movement. Faction leaders from the movement have strongly condemned the state’s actions on social media, characterizing the arrest as a calculated political witch hunt ahead of the 2027 General Elections.

The structural root of the charges dates back to October 16, when President Ruto’s presidential motorcade and Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna’s Linda Mwananchi convoy crossed paths at the Kitale flyover. President Ruto was exiting the area after launching local development projects, while Senator Sifuna was arriving with his political brigade.

After the President departed, local authorities used tear gas to disperse a gathering addressed by Sifuna and Governor Natembeya, resulting in two injured police officers and two damaged government vehicles.

This high-profile arrest unfolds against the backdrop of deteriorating political relations between Governor Natembeya and the executive branch. Regional tensions have risen sharply following intense public disputes over the ownership of the 821 million shilling Masinde Muliro Market project, alongside the recent withdrawal of the governor’s official security detail.
