Two Alleged Reasons Why Okudzeto Sued Gyewu Today Sparks Reactions Online

Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has filed a defamation suit against NPP communicator Benjamin Gyewu-Appiah and Media General. The suit, announced on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, concerns allegations about the evacuation of Ghanaians from South Africa.

What has won the spotlight are the two claims believed to have prompted the minister’s decision to drag the NPP stalwart to court. According to Bongo Ideas, a popular Ghanaian political and social commentator, who reported them on his official Facebook page, the claims were made by Gyewu-Appiah during an appearance on Onua FM.

The first alleged claim is that the minister diverted money meant for the evacuation of Ghanaians from South Africa and spent it on musician Fantana. Gyewu-Appiah reportedly described the minister as a thief and suggested that both he and his wife would eventually be jailed, accusing the wife of involvement in purchasing tickets for the evacuation exercise.

The second alleged claim is that the minister used the same funds to purchase 17 houses for the musician.

Following the news, Ghanaians have flooded social media with reactions, and opinions are largely mixed. A sizeable number of commenters expressed surprise and amusement, with some describing the situation as interesting and a reflection of the current state of Ghana’s political discourse. Others criticised what they saw as reckless and unrestrained talk by political communicators, suggesting that such statements carry serious legal implications.

Another section of social media users applauded the minister’s decision to seek legal redress, calling it a good move. Some also questioned why the minister did not target only the individual who made the claims, while others wondered why Media General, the platform that carried the statements, was included. A few pointed out that the media house could have stood by its claims if it had evidence to back them.
