Tricycle rider, immigration officer die in explosion at Hamile, second officer in stable condition – GIS
The Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) has confirmed the death of one of its officers and a tricycle rider following an explosion at Hamile.
In a press statement issued on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, the Service said its officer lost his life in the line of duty during a border patrol operation in the Hamile Sector.
GIS said two of its officers were involved in the incident, which happened in the early hours of the day along an unapproved route in the sector.
According to the statement, a team of four officers on border patrol “responded to an unusual sound in the area” during which they intercepted a man carrying a load on a tricycle.
He tried to escape, and as the officers moved in to find out what he was carrying.
“In the process of trying to stop him, the load exploded, resulting in the death of the tricycle rider and injuries to two officers,” the statement said.
The other officer “is currently receiving emergency medical care at Nandom Hospital and is reported to be in stable condition and responding to treatment.”
The Sector Commander and a team have visited the scene, which has been secured. The Service said investigations have started to establish the full circumstances of the incident. It did not say what the load contained.
GIS assured the public that “border security operations in the Hamile Sector remain fully operational, and that all necessary measures are being taken to ensure the safety and security of the area.”
The Service extended its condolences to the family, colleagues, and friends of the deceased officer and appealed to the media and the public “to respect the privacy of the affected families.”
