IET-GH to explore concrete design and fire safety using fibreglass reinforcement

The Institution of Engineering and Technology, Ghana (IET-GH), is set to bring engineering professionals together to explore innovative applications of fibre-reinforced polymer technology in the construction industry at its 40th Annual General Conference and Induction Ceremony.

The conference, being organised in collaboration with Viva Fiberglass Reinforcement, will focus on the practical application of Glass Fibre Reinforced Polymer (GFRP) bars in concrete construction, with particular attention to structural design and fire safety.

The first technical session will examine the design of concrete members reinforced with Viva GFRP bars, providing practical insights into how the material can be applied in modern construction and structural engineering.

A second session will focus on the behaviour of Viva Fiberglass bars under elevated temperatures, highlighting fire-design considerations and safety requirements when GFRP reinforcement is used in concrete structures.

The discussions are expected to provide engineers with practical knowledge of the performance, design considerations and safety implications of adopting alternative reinforcement materials in construction.

Participants will also earn six Continuing Professional Development (CPD) points, which count towards the mandatory requirements set by the Engineering Council of Ghana for the renewal of professional licences.

The conference is scheduled for November 19, 2026, at the Ghana Shippers’ Authority Auditorium, No. 12 Cruickshank Street, Ambassadorial Enclave, West Ridge, Accra.

The event is expected to offer a platform for knowledge-sharing, professional development and discussions on emerging technologies shaping the future of engineering and construction in Ghana.
