America Summoned Me After Mahama’s UN Speech – Ghana’s Ambassador Drops Bombshell
Ghana’s Ambassador to the United States, Victor Smith, has revealed that President John Mahama’s powerful speech on reparatory justice at the United Nations did not sit well with the American government.
According to him, he was summoned by US officials to defend Ghana’s position.
Speaking in an interview on Channel One TV’s The Point of View on Monday, November 2, Ambassador Smith said President Mahama’s UN address angered some officials in Washington.
President Mahama, who is the African Union’s Champion on Reparations, had told the UN General Assembly that the world must move from just recognising the evils of slavery and colonialism to real and meaningful repair for Africa and people of African descent.
The speech, which called for reparatory justice for the transatlantic slave trade, colonialism and systemic racism, was bold. And America did not like it.
Ambassador Smith said after the speech, he was called in by the US administration to explain what Ghana meant and why the President took that strong position.
“I was summoned to defend Ghana’s position,” he told Bernard Avle.
He said he told the Americans plainly that Ghana was not begging, but demanding justice. That slavery and colonialism destroyed Africa’s economy, stole its people, and created lasting inequality that still hurts Africa today.
He said Ghana will not be bullied or forced to drop the reparations agenda because it is the truth and Africa deserves justice.
This comes at a time when Ghana-US relations are under pressure over trade, AGOA and other policy issues. But Ambassador Smith said Ghana will continue to speak the truth even if powerful countries are uncomfortable.
He said President Mahama’s stand has made Africa proud and that Ghana will stand by it.
