Asante Akyem North MP’s extradition hearing set for Nov. 18
The Member of Parliament for Asante Akyem North, Ohene Kwame Frimpong, popularly known as OK Frimpong, remains in custody in Amsterdam after efforts to secure his release on bail failed, Majority Chief Whip Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor has disclosed.
Mr Dafeamekpor said two applications for bail filed on behalf of the embattled lawmaker had been unsuccessful, leaving him in the custody of Dutch authorities as he awaits an extradition hearing scheduled for November 18, 2026.
Speaking at a Leaders’ Media Briefing on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, ahead of Parliament’s resumption, the South Dayi MP said the legal team was still pursuing the case in the Netherlands.
“Regarding our colleague O K Frimpong, the update is that we have failed to secure bail for him in respect of the two applications that were brought before the court on the tribunal, and so he is still in Amsterdam in custody,” he said.
Mr Dafeamekpor explained that the substantive extradition hearing would take place on November 18, barring any unforeseen circumstances.
“Barring unforeseen circumstances, the extradition hearing will take place on the 18th of November, and so we are still before the court in Holland,” he stated.
He appealed to the public to remember the MP and his legal team in prayers, expressing hope that the proceedings would conclude favourably and allow Mr Frimpong to return to Ghana.
“You should all remember us in prayers so that the hearing goes well, so he can return and continue with his work,” he said.
Mr Dafeamekpor also dismissed reports suggesting that the MP had already been transferred to the United States.
He stressed that Mr Frimpong remained in the Netherlands and was still going through the judicial process to determine whether he should be extradited.
“So he is not being taken to the US as it has been alleged. No, he is still going through the rigours of the judicial process, and if it ends, there is a verdict,” he said.
He added that Parliament and the legal team would inform the public once the court delivered its decision on the extradition request.
“I believe all of you will be informed regarding the verdict, whether or not he should be extradited to the US in respect of the allegations levelled against him,” he stated.
Background to OK Frimpong’s detention
OK Frimpong was arrested at Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport on May 10, 2026, after arriving from Ghana.
Parliament confirmed his detention on May 12, 2026, in a statement issued by the Clerk to Parliament, Ebenezer Ahumah Djietror.
The statement said the Speaker and parliamentary leadership were engaging Ghana’s diplomatic mission in The Hague to obtain further information about the circumstances surrounding the MP’s detention.
At the time, Mr Dafeamekpor disclosed that legal representation had been secured for the lawmaker, while Parliament and his lawyers were seeking official documents relating to the arrest.
He also urged the media to refrain from circulating unverified information, noting that the legal team was yet to receive an authenticated copy of the arrest warrant.
The detention has been linked to a United States extradition request involving allegations of romance scams, money laundering and other financial crimes.
According to reports on the US indictment, Mr Frimpong and alleged accomplices are accused of defrauding victims through romance-related schemes and laundering proceeds of the alleged crimes.
The reported indictment contains 18 counts, including allegations of money laundering, bank fraud and wire fraud.
The allegations have not been proven in court, and Mr Frimpong remains subject to the judicial process in the Netherlands.
In September, Mr Dafeamekpor disclosed that two attempts to secure the MP’s release had been rejected by Dutch authorities.
The applications reportedly included an initial substantive bail request and an appeal.
At the time, the Majority Chief Whip said the legal team was preparing for the substantive extradition hearing, which has now been scheduled for November 18.
The upcoming hearing is expected to determine the next stage of the proceedings concerning the US request for Mr Frimpong’s extradition.
Mr Dafeamekpor has reiterated that the MP remains in Dutch custody and that a final decision on whether he should be extradited to the United States rests with the court.
Parliament is expected to continue engaging the relevant authorities as the legal process unfolds.
