We Will Deal With Anyone Pushing For A Third Term – Kofi Bentil Fires Strong Warning

IMANI Africa Vice President Kofi Bentil has expressed strong opposition to any attempt to extend Ghana’s presidential tenure beyond the limits established by the country’s Constitution, warning that such a move would face resistance from him and other citizens.

According to a report by TV3 Ghana on Sunday, November 1, 2026, Bentil made his position known amid renewed discussions about the possibility of extending presidential tenure to allow a third term in office.

The legal practitioner stressed that Ghana’s constitutional provisions on presidential terms must be respected, adding that he and other supporters of democratic governance would not remain silent if anyone attempted to promote such an arrangement.

“IMANI Africa Vice President Kofi Bentil has warned that he and others will deal with anyone who advocates for a third-term presidential extension.”

His remarks have added to the ongoing national conversation about the importance of presidential term limits and the constitutional arrangements governing political leadership in Ghana.

The issue has attracted attention from political commentators, civil society organisations and members of the public, particularly over concerns about preserving the country’s democratic institutions.

Ghana’s 1992 Constitution limits a person from being elected president for more than two terms. Any proposal to alter this provision would therefore involve constitutional amendment procedures rather than an ordinary political decision.

Bentil’s comments reflect his position that the existing constitutional safeguards should not be undermined through attempts to extend presidential tenure.

The debate also highlights the importance of constitutional accountability, respect for democratic institutions and the peaceful transfer of political power.

As discussions surrounding presidential term limits continue, attention will remain on reactions from political leaders, civil society groups and other stakeholders regarding the protection of Ghana’s constitutional framework.
