Serwaa Meant No Harm, My Chains Are Real Gold but I Pretend They Are Copper — Dr Likee
Ghanaian comedian and actor Dr Likee, popularly known as Akabenezer, has addressed the comments made by broadcaster Serwaa Amihere about the numerous chains he wears, explaining that he believes her remarks were misunderstood and were not intended to offend him.
The entertainer described Serwaa as a close personal friend and dismissed suggestions that her observation was motivated by any intention to ridicule or embarrass him. He explained that she was simply trying to communicate a particular message, although the way her statement was received created a different impression.
Speaking about their relationship, Dr Likee maintained that he understood the intention behind her remarks and did not consider them an attack on his personality or appearance.
“Serwaa is my very good friend, she didn’t say that in a malicious way, she was trying to make a point and was misunderstood,” he stated.
Beyond defending the broadcaster, the comedian also revealed an interesting detail about the expensive-looking accessories that have become part of his distinctive appearance, disclosing that the chains are actually made of gold despite his habit of describing them as copper.
According to him, pretending that the jewellery is made from a less valuable material is a deliberate decision motivated by concerns about his personal security. He explained that revealing their actual worth could attract the attention of criminals who might attempt to steal them or cause him harm.
“The chains are actually gold, but I pretend they are copper for safety reasons, I don’t want any unscrupulous persons to try and rob me or harm me to obtain them,” he explained.
The discussion originated from remarks Serwaa Amihere made during a public engagement where she addressed the growing tendency among some young women to purchase imitation designer products to create an appearance of wealth and social status.
The GHOne TV presenter and lawyer used Dr Likee’s signature chains as an example while questioning the practice of wearing several accessories that are presented as expensive jewellery despite not being genuine gold.
“You know what you’re wearing is not gold, it’s copper, but you pack it plenty like Akabenezer, why? It’s very offensive,” Serwaa remarked.
Her statement subsequently became a subject of discussion among entertainment personalities, with Afia Schwarzenegger, Efia Odo and Mzbel also weighing in on aspects of her comments about counterfeit luxury items.
However, Dr Likee’s response has offered a different perspective on the exchange, as he has chosen to defend his friend rather than interpret her statement as an attempt to disrespect him.
His explanation has also revealed why he keeps the actual value of his jewellery private, maintaining that presenting the gold chains as copper helps him avoid attracting unwanted attention from people who may wish to steal them.
