Nairobi Student Graduates, Plans a Party and Invites His Church Members, Only for No One to Attend
A First Class Honours graduate in Finance says the emptiest moment of his journey came not on a lack of money, but at a party where most of his church family stayed away.
Hezzy Kinama, known online as Divinely Favoured, shared the experience on social media, describing how the church he grew up in, served as a youth leader, and ministered in turned out in far smaller numbers than he expected.
He said he collected his degree in worn-out white shoes and no new clothes, with his parents as the only relatives present. The three of them later ate ugali and sukuma wiki before boarding a matatu back to Kangundo.
The next day, he organised a celebration and fundraiser aimed at raising money for his master’s degree. He borrowed KSh 11,000 to pay for food and a cake, and invited people widely, including local politicians.
None of the politicians came, and fewer than 30 of the church’s more than 100 members showed up, leaving much of the food and cake untouched. “I expected to be shown love during that time by the church I fellowship,” he wrote.
The event raised KSh 21,000. After he repaid the KSh 11,000 loan, he was left with KSh 10,000 against postgraduate fees of more than KSh 300,000.
Help eventually came from outside his circle. A person who was neither a church member nor a childhood friend gave him a cheque for KSh 50,000, which he used to enrol.
He said he still slept hungry and struggled with rent during that period, and that opposition from people close to him later surfaced during his wedding preparations.
He insists he holds no grudge. Describing himself as a born-again Christian, evangelist, and Sunday school teacher, he said the church often fails to show love to fellow believers. “You failed me when I needed you, but I won’t give up on you,” he wrote.
