Melaye:This is insulting, especially coming from someone who cant spell Holy Qur’an correctly-Ahmad
Former Kogi West Senator, Dino Melaye, has challenged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to a Quranic citation contest following the president’s recent journey to Saudi Arabia to perform Umrah, an Islamic pilgrimage.
Melaye made the challenge in a post shared on his official X account, where he indicated that he intended to test the president’s knowledge of the Holy Quran once he returned from the religious exercise. The former lawmaker also stressed that nobody should treat matters concerning God with mockery or disrespect.
His remarks have since attracted reactions on social media, including criticism from former presidential aide Bashir Ahmad, who questioned the manner in which Melaye presented the challenge.
Ahmad described the former senator’s statement as insulting, arguing that his criticism of the president was undermined by an alleged spelling error in his reference to the Holy Quran.
According to the former presidential aide, it was contradictory for Melaye to challenge Tinubu over his knowledge of the sacred Islamic text while allegedly failing to spell its name correctly in his own post. He suggested that the former lawmaker should have paid greater attention to the wording of his statement before making such a public challenge.
In his response, Ahmad wrote: “This is nothing short of insulting, especially coming from someone who cannot even spell the name of the Holy Qur’an correctly. It is quite ironic to show such disrespect while failing to get the very name of the sacred text right. Try again, Senator.”
The exchange has added another layer to the online reactions surrounding Tinubu’s visit to Saudi Arabia, with the discussion shifting from the president’s religious trip to a disagreement over religious knowledge and the appropriate way to comment on matters of faith.
