Today’s Headlines:2027: Tinubu best presidential candidate, building one trillion dollar economy – APC Chairman, Yilwatda, How Trump’s economic promises are holding up so far

The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Nentawe Yilwatda, on Monday described President Bola Tinubu as the candidate of choice and the best among other candidates vying for the presidency in 2027.

Yilwatda made the declaration during the APC’s presidential campaign rally in Calabar, Cross River State.

He claimed that Tinubu is building a one-trillion-dollar economy for Nigeria’s future, just like he built the Lagos State economy while he was governor.

According to Yilwatda: “Let me acknowledge the presence of everybody who is here. Today we present to Nigerians our candidate, our father, leader of our party, a transformer, an agent of change, the man that fought the ocean in Lagos into a land, reclaimed the ocean; he is transforming Nigeria also.

On the campaign trail in 2024, Donald Trump made a series of bold promises to voters about how he would rapidly drive down the cost of living and transform the US economy if they sent him back to the White House.

Trump’s economic message resonated with a US public exhausted by years of high inflation during the Biden era.

Two years later, some of those promises – such as a booming stock market and cheaper eggs – have been delivered. But many others have come up far short, so far at least, underscoring why Trump is deeply underwater on the economy in polling.

A public affairs commentator, Mahdi Shehu, has taken a swipe at former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, saying he is overrated, over-pampered and politically expired.

Mahdi made this statement during an interview on Symfoni TV, where he said the appointment of El-Rufai as Deputy Director General of the African Democratic Congress, ADC, is just cosmetics and a media show that will not add any value to the party.

He stated that El-Rufai has lost his political relevance and cannot influence the outcome of the 2027 general elections, no matter the position ADC gives to him.

“El-Rufai has been overrated and over-pampered. His appointment as deputy DG is just cosmetics. He can’t influence the 2027 elections. People have been deeply assaulted by El-Rufai’s inhuman economic policies,” Mahdi Shehu declared.

The National Assembly is considering a proposal to create 74 additional seats for women in the Senate and House of Representatives as part of efforts to address gender imbalance in Nigeria’s  political representation, Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele has said.

Bamidele also disclosed that the ongoing review of the 1999 Constitution includes a proposal to create three additional seats reserved for women in each of the 36 State Houses of Assembly.

He said the proposed seats would be in addition to existing legislative positions, ensuring that no constituency loses its current representation.

The Senate Leader, who is Vice Chairman of the Senate Committee on the Review of the 1999 Constitution, made the disclosure on Monday at the 2026 Law Week organised by the Ekiti State chapter of the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA).

Vice President Kashim Shettima has acknowledged the hardship caused by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s economic reforms, saying that, like Singapore, Nigeria’s economy would emerge strong.

At the APC Presidential Campaign Rally at the U.J. Esuene Stadium in Calabar, Shettima compared Tinubu’s leadership to that of Singapore’s founding Prime Minister, Lee Kuan Yew.

According to the Vice President, Yew’s policies helped transform the Asian nation from a struggling former colony into a major global financial and trading hub.

He urged Cross River voters to renew the mandate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2027, saying that Tinubu’s reforms are beginning to yield positive results.
