Matiang’i Says He Has a Problem With People in the Opposition Who Are Saying Anyone Can Replace Ruto
Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr Fred Matiang’i says he has a big problem with opposition leaders who often claim that anyone in their camp can replace President William Ruto in the upcoming General Election.
In a statement issued on Monday, November 2, 2026, Matiang’i said such remarks suggest that the leaders’ only problem with Ruto is that they are not the ones occupying the presidential seat, rather than his style of governance.
“I have a big problem with the people in the opposition saying anybody can replace Ruto because that suggests that our problem with Ruto is simply that we are not the ones occupying the seat ourselves,” Matiang’i said.
The remarks come as several opposition leaders, including Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka, former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and Matiang’i himself, seek to position themselves for the presidential race.
The leaders have maintained that any one of them can defeat Ruto if they receive support from the others, arguing that they are all qualified to lead the country. However, they are yet to settle on one person who will fly their flag in the presidential race.
