Gachagua Receives Hostile Reception At His Backyard As Kikuyu Residents Chant Tutam, Sparks A Debate
Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua faced interruptions during a political visit to Kikuyu Constituency after sections of residents disrupted his address with chants expressing support for President William Ruto.
The former Deputy President struggled to deliver his speech as groups of attendees repeatedly shouted “Tutam”, a slogan associated with Ruto’s bid for a second term in the 2027 General Election.
Videos circulating from the event showed some residents using vuvuzelas and megaphones to drown out speeches by Gachagua and members of his delegation. Despite attempts to restore order, the interruptions continued, making it difficult for the opposition leader to communicate his message.
The incident has drawn attention to the political contest surrounding the Mount Kenya region, where Gachagua has been seeking to consolidate his support following his fallout with President Ruto.
Local political rivalries, including tensions involving National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah, have also featured in the political competition within Kikuyu Constituency.
The reception comes as political leaders begin positioning themselves ahead of the 2027 elections, with both government and opposition figures seeking to strengthen their grassroots networks.
The incident raises questions about the different political loyalties emerging within the Mount Kenya region.
