Gachagua Ally Says the Opposition Has Not Settled on Sifuna as Its Presidential Candidate

Kirinyaga Woman Representative Njeri Maina has dismissed claims that the opposition has settled on Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna as its presidential candidate ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Speaking during an interview on Citizen TV’s Daybreak programme on Monday, November 2, 2026, Maina, an ally of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, said the opposition had not reached any agreement on its presidential flag bearer.

She added that Sifuna, Gachagua, Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka, Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro and People’s Liberation Party (PLP) leader Martha Karua were all still in the race for the opposition ticket.

“There is no such decision because if it were, there would be an announcement. There is no coalition agreement yet between any of the parties in the united alternative government. Maybe it’s been floated but it has not been decided,” Maina said.

The Woman Representative also defended opposition leaders who missed the launch of Sifuna’s Linda Mwananchi Party headquarters last week. She said the leaders were engaged in other activities and that their absence did not mean the opposition was divided.

Maina added that she sometimes misses DCP rallies, but that does not mean she is not an ardent supporter of Gachagua. She said opposition leaders engage with one another regularly and are expected to remain united and front one candidate against President William Ruto.

Her remarks come amid discussions about the opposition’s possible presidential candidate as political leaders position themselves ahead of the August 10, 2027 General Election.

Gachagua recently hosted separate meetings with Sifuna and Kalonzo at his Wamunyoro residence as the opposition intensifies talks before agreeing on one candidate.
