FG introduces USSD credit service for Nigerians without smartphones
The Federal Government has unveiled a USSD-based consumer credit service aimed at enabling Nigerians to access loans through basic mobile phones without requiring internet connectivity or smartphones.
The service, known as SPARK, was introduced by the Nigerian Consumer Credit Corporation (CREDICORP) as part of efforts to expand access to consumer financing, particularly among first-time borrowers and individuals with little or no formal credit history.
With the initiative, eligible Nigerians are expected to access consumer credit using the USSD code 347333#, making the service accessible to people who do not own smartphones or have access to mobile internet.
However, CREDICORP clarified that although the USSD code has been unveiled, the service is not yet confirmed to be fully operational nationwide.
The corporation indicated that SPARK is expected to become more widely available before the end of 2026.
The initiative is designed to broaden financial inclusion by providing more Nigerians with access to formal consumer credit through a simple mobile-based platform.
