Division Within Opposition as Justin Muturi Accuse Gachagua of Political Sabotage and Bullying

Former Attorney General Justin Muturi has sparked fresh political debate after accusing former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua of promoting political divisions and allegedly using intimidation tactics against fellow opposition leaders.

Muturi’s latest remarks come amid growing disagreements within the opposition over leadership, political alliances and the strategy to be adopted ahead of the 2027 General Election.

The Democratic Party leader questioned Gachagua’s approach to opposition politics, arguing that no single politician should consider himself the ultimate authority within the coalition.

He maintained that opposition leaders must be allowed to express their opinions, negotiate independently and participate in political decisions without facing pressure from influential individuals.

Muturi further argued that building a united opposition requires tolerance, consultation and respect for different political interests.

He cautioned against what he viewed as attempts to impose conditions on other leaders, noting that political cooperation should not be mistaken for surrendering individual party identities.

The former Attorney General also challenged the perception that particular political leaders or communities should determine the direction of the opposition, insisting that the presidency is a national contest that requires support from across the country.

His criticism comes at a sensitive moment when several opposition figures are positioning themselves for possible negotiations over a joint presidential candidate.

The question of who should lead the opposition and how different political parties should share responsibilities has continued to generate disagreements.

Muturi’s intervention also follows concerns raised by former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i, who recently called for humility and cooperation among opposition politicians.

On his part, Gachagua has continued building his political influence through the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP), while engaging other leaders in discussions about the future of the opposition.

The latest exchange has once again exposed the challenges facing opposition politicians as they attempt to establish a common political direction.

With the 2027 General Election drawing closer, it remains to be seen whether the leaders will resolve their differences through dialogue or allow the disagreements to create further cracks within their political ranks.
