BREAKING NEWS: Sakaja Dumps Ruto’s UDA, Joins Rival Party

Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has officially left the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) and joined the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), marking a significant change in his political affiliation ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Sakaja announced his decision on Monday, November 2, 2026, during a media briefing at ODM headquarters, Chungwa House, in Lavington, Nairobi.

The governor confirmed that he would seek re-election in 2027 using the ODM ticket while continuing to support President William Ruto’s broad-based government.

His move follows weeks of speculation about his political future, with ODM leaders and supporters repeatedly urging him to join the party.

Sakaja had given an indication of his intentions during a memorial event for former Prime Minister Raila Odinga at Jacaranda Grounds on Saturday, October 31.

While addressing the gathering, the governor asked Nairobi residents whether he should join ODM, UDA or the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP).

“What do you say, should I join ODM?” he asked, drawing reactions from supporters who had been calling for his entry into the Orange party.

He also appeared to acknowledge ODM’s leadership, telling party officials that they would guide him following his political decision.

The possibility of Sakaja joining ODM had previously emerged in August 2026, when he disclosed that party officials and supporters had approached him about leaving UDA.

His defection now raises questions about the contest for the ODM gubernatorial ticket in Nairobi ahead of the next elections.

Makadara MP George Aladwa has also been mentioned as a potential contender for the party’s nomination, setting the stage for a possible internal contest.

ODM leaders have maintained that aspirants seeking elective positions should participate in competitive nominations rather than expect automatic tickets.

Sakaja was elected Nairobi governor in August 2022 on a UDA ticket after defeating Jubilee candidate Polycarp Igathe. His latest political move therefore places him under a different party as he prepares to defend his seat in 2027.
