Bayern Munich Vs Ajax Friendly In Kenya Faces Court Battle As Petitioners Demand Answers On Billions

A group of six petitioners has moved to the High Court seeking to stop the government from funding the friendly match between Bayern Munich and Ajax at the Raila Odinga International Stadium.

The petition was filed on Monday and targets the match scheduled for January 5. The petitioners claim the government has committed billions of shillings towards hosting the two European giants.

They want the court to issue conservatory orders that block the authorisation and spending of any public money on the event until the case is heard and decided.

The activists also want the respondents to disclose all sponsorship agreements within seven days. They are asking for the names of corporate sponsors and their financial contributions. A full breakdown of spending on appearance fees and travel is also being demanded.

According to the court papers the match is reported to cost about Ksh724.6 million or €5 million. The petitioners however say the figure has not been independently verified and needs official clarification.

The legal move comes a day after Sports Principal Secretary Elijah Mwangi said the government would not sponsor the match. He insisted that a private sponsor had come forward to bring the two teams to Kenya.

Mwangi did not however disclose how much it would cost to host the European clubs.

President William Ruto announced that the two clubs would play at the Talanta Stadium as Kenya prepares for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations. Reports later claimed the match would feature legends or junior sides.

Mwangi dismissed those claims and maintained that the senior teams of both clubs would travel to Nairobi for the inaugural match after being approached by the government.

The case now awaits directions from the court.
