Accra Mayor Rewards 20 AMA Workers With Smartwatches and Phones for Punctuality
The Accra Mayor, Hon. Michael Kpakpo Allotey, has rewarded 20 employees of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) with AI-powered smartwatches and mobile phones for consistently reporting to work before 8:00am.
The gesture is part of an initiative aimed at promoting punctuality, discipline and commitment among public sector workers, particularly those responsible for providing essential services to residents of the Accra Metropolis.
According to reports, the rewards followed a month-long attendance monitoring exercise organised by the Assembly to identify employees who consistently demonstrated good timekeeping and dedication to their official responsibilities.
During the monitoring period, the attendance records of staff members were assessed to determine those who regularly arrived at work before the stipulated 8:00am reporting time.
At the end of the exercise, 20 employees were identified and selected for recognition. Their commitment to punctuality earned them AI-powered smartwatches and mobile phones presented through the initiative led by Mayor Michael Kpakpo Allotey.
The development has attracted attention because of the unusual approach adopted by the Accra Metropolitan Assembly to encourage workplace discipline. Instead of relying solely on warnings and disciplinary measures to address lateness, the Assembly has also chosen to reward employees who demonstrate the kind of behaviour it wants to promote.
Punctuality is an important requirement in every workplace, especially within public institutions where employees are expected to serve citizens and attend to official responsibilities within designated working hours.
For the AMA, ensuring that workers report to their various offices on time could contribute to improved productivity and the effective delivery of municipal services.
The recognition of the 20 employees is also expected to motivate other staff members to take their reporting times more seriously. Knowing that consistent punctuality can attract appreciation and rewards may encourage workers to develop better attendance habits.
Beyond the smartwatches and mobile phones, the initiative sends a message about the importance of appreciating employees who demonstrate commitment to their work.
It also highlights the role of leadership in creating a working environment where good performance, discipline and dedication are recognised.
Although the exercise focused specifically on employees who reported before 8:00am, its broader objective is to encourage a more responsible attitude towards public service.
The initiative could serve as an example for other public institutions looking for ways to improve staff punctuality and workplace productivity.
For the 20 beneficiaries, the rewards represent recognition of their consistent efforts, while other AMA employees may now have an additional reason to make punctuality a priority.
