Stored water could dry up – GMet warns northern farmers over El Niño

The Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMet) has warned that El Niño conditions could worsen dry conditions in northern Ghana, threatening water availability and agricultural production in an area considered the country’s food basket.

Deputy Director and Head of Research and Applied Meteorology at GMet, Francisca Martey, said the impact of the weather phenomenon was expected to be more pronounced in the northern parts of the country, where rainfall had already ceased.

Madam Franciscca explained that the little water farmers had stored for agricultural activities could also dry up as the prolonged dry spell continues.

“In the north, their rainfall has ceased by then. And the little rainwater that they have kept or saved would also dry up. So that is the challenge you would have,” she said on Joy FM monitored by MyNewsGh.

She warned that the extended dry conditions could create difficulties for farmers, particularly those in the savannah areas, which contribute significantly to Ghana’s food production.

Martey advised farmers to adopt mulching and climate-smart agricultural practices to help their crops withstand the prolonged dry spells.

“We are expecting that they will practise more mulching systems, climate-smart agricultural systems. I know the AES and the Ministry of Agriculture will direct them on what to do,” she stated.

She also urged cocoa farmers to watch out for black pod disease and other insects that could affect crops during the dry period.

“We should look for black pod diseases. We should look for other insects coming out for various crops,” she added.
