72-year-old man who killed two relatives at Sakumono deserves death sentence – A Plus

The Member of Parliament for Gomoa Central, Kwame Asare Obeng, popularly known as A Plus, has called for the death penalty for a 72-year-old man arrested in connection with the killing of two relatives at Sakumono in the Greater Accra Region.

A Plus expressed outrage over the incident, which reportedly occurred on Friday, October 30, 2026, at NTHC Estate, where Irene Atuguba, 47, and her uncle, George Atuguba, 57, were allegedly shot dead following a confrontation over a GH¢500,000 debt.

In a social media post on Monday, November 2, the lawmaker said the alleged circumstances of the killings were particularly disturbing because children of one of the victims were reportedly at home when the incident happened.

He questioned how the children would recover from the psychological trauma of losing a family member in such violent circumstances.

A Plus stated that if he were President of Ghana, he would ensure that the suspect received the death penalty, with the execution broadcast live as a deterrent to others.

He argued that severe punishment was necessary for crimes involving the taking of human life, insisting that people must understand the seriousness of such actions and the consequences they attract.

The comments have reignited public discussion about punishment for serious violent crimes and the role of capital punishment in Ghana’s justice system.

The suspect, identified as Samuel Christopher Osei Anto, was arrested on Sunday, November 1, at a hideout in Tikrom, near Ejisu in the Ashanti Region, following a police manhunt.

According to the police, preliminary investigations indicate that the suspect allegedly visited the victims’ residence with a 47-year-old woman, Beatrice Mumuni, to demand repayment of money he claimed George Atuguba owed him.

A misunderstanding reportedly followed, during which the two victims were allegedly shot. Police said a Smith and Wesson pistol and seven rounds of ammunition were recovered during the suspect’s arrest. Mumuni had also been arrested to assist investigations.

The suspect remains in police custody as investigations continue.

However, Ghana’s Criminal Offences (Amendment) Act, 2023 (Act 1101), abolished the death penalty for murder and replaced it with life imprisonment. The suspect remains presumed innocent until proven guilty by a court of competent jurisdiction.
