2027: Why I Dropped Presidential Ambition for Peter Obi – Kwankwaso

Rabiu Kwankwaso, the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) vice-presidential candidate, has revealed the reasons behind his decision to drop his presidential ambition and throw his support behind Peter Obi. He maintained that fairness demands that the southern region be allowed to complete its turn in Nigeria’s presidency.

According to a report by DAILY POST published on Monday, November 2, 2026, Kwankwaso said his decision was influenced by Obi’s credibility, leadership abilities and their shared political vision.

The former Kano State governor made this known while addressing journalists at his residence in Kano on Sunday. He explained that Obi deserved the opportunity to lead the country, particularly because he hails from the South, which should be allowed to complete its presidential turn.

Kwankwaso stated that his support for Obi was a deliberate sacrifice motivated by mutual understanding and a common desire to move Nigeria forward. He also expressed confidence in their ability to provide effective leadership and tackle the country’s numerous challenges.

According to him, his decision was not based on a lack of presidential ambition but on the need to prioritise national interest and political fairness.

The former Kano governor further revealed that he had contested for the presidency on three consecutive occasions. However, he chose to put aside his personal ambition and support Obi’s candidacy under the NDC.

He argued that giving the South the opportunity to complete its turn would promote equity, national unity and a sense of political balance among Nigeria’s different regions.

Kwankwaso also expressed optimism about his political relationship with Obi, stressing that both men share similar values, aspirations and leadership principles.

His remarks highlight the political understanding between the two NDC figures as they prepare for the 2027 general elections, with Kwankwaso emphasising regional fairness and collective political interests over his long-standing ambition to become president.
