The Man Who Turned Anansesem Into Bangers — Okomfour Kwadee Lives On

Okomfour Kwadee, born Jerry Anaba from Navrongo in the Upper East Region, is one of Ghana’s most influential hiplife legends.

He did not enter music just to entertain, but to tell stories. At a time when hiplife was still finding its feet in the early 2000s, Kwadee brought something different. He blended modern rhythms with traditional Ghanaian storytelling, especially anansesem, turning everyday life into music.

Though he is from the north, he became the commander of the Twi accent. His deep mastery of the Akan language, his emotional delivery, and his vivid imagery made him stand out. He didn’t just rap or sing, he performed stories that people could see and feel.

Kwadee also made history as the first Ghanaian artist to create a named fan base, the famous “Atuatedom”. His music connected deeply with the youth because it spoke about real struggles, relationships, humour and life lessons.

His rise was powered by classic albums like Abro Ne Bayie (2001), Me Toaso (2002) and Okomfour Se Koo (2004). These projects helped shape hiplife as a storytelling culture.

He gave Ghana timeless hits including “Ataa Adwoa”, “Ofie Nipa”, “Abrantee”, “Ka Wonan To Su” and “Meyere Ne Mempena”. In 2007, “Ka Wonan To So” won Best Original Song/Lyrics at the Ghana Music Awards, confirming his genius as a songwriter.

Despite his success, his career suffered setbacks in later years and he stepped away from the spotlight, worrying his loyal fans.

However, recent years have brought hope. Reports from 2025 and 2026 show encouraging signs of recovery, with surprise appearances in Kumasi and other events reminding fans of his unmatched energy.

Today, Kwadee remains a legend. Artists like Fameye continue to pay tribute to him, and his songs still live on across generations. His true legacy is how he turned hiplife into a tool for telling authentic Ghanaian stories.
