South Africa cannot continue with a mostly white Springbok team, letter writer says

A letter published in the Sunday Times has called on South African rugby to speed up change in the national team. The writer, Jacob Kudzayi Mutisi, says the Springboks remain too white for a country where about 80 percent of the people are black.

Mutisi argues that South African rugby has made good progress since the end of apartheid, but that the work of real transformation is not finished. He believes the national team should better show the full picture of the country. In the letter he writes that rugby belongs to all South Africans and that its future must reflect that reality.

The piece was shared by TimesLIVE on social media on Sunday morning. The post quickly drew hundreds of replies. Many people pushed back against the letter. Some said the Springboks should be picked on skill alone and that race should not decide who plays. Others pointed out that Mutisi is from Zimbabwe and asked why he is writing about a South African team. A few replies used the same logic in reverse and asked why soccer, which is mostly black, is not treated the same way.

The Springboks have long been at the centre of the debate about transformation in South African sport. The team has won four Rugby World Cups and is currently one of the strongest sides in the world. Players of colour have featured more often in recent years, and Siya Kolisi has captained the side to World Cup success. Even so, the starting line-ups and larger squads still have more white players than black players in many matches.

Supporters of faster change say school rugby, club structures and development pathways still favour certain communities. They want more black players given real chances at the highest level so the team looks more like the country. Critics of the letter say winning should come first and that forcing numbers can weaken the side. They argue that the best players, whatever their background, already get selected.

The letter adds to a discussion that has been going on for more than 25 years. Rugby administrators continue to set targets for transformation while coaches try to balance those targets with on-field results. Mutisi’s piece makes clear that, for some people, the current makeup of the Springboks is still not good enough.
