Migori Youth Secure First KPL Victory With Win Over Mombasa United

Migori Youth finally registered their first victory in the FKF Premier League after beating Mombasa United 2-0 at Awendo Green Stadium on Sunday, ending their wait for maximum points following three consecutive draws.

Philemon Nyakwaka opened the scoring from the penalty spot shortly before half-time, while Frederick Ologi added a second late in the game to secure a deserved result for the hosts.

Migori had shown resilience in their opening matches but struggled to turn that into victories.

Draws against Kenya Police, Mathare United and Shabana had left them still searching for their first win since gaining promotion to the top flight.

Their meeting with Mombasa presented an opportunity to change that situation, with the visitors also arriving without a league victory after suffering three consecutive defeats.

The hosts began with attacking intent and nearly took the lead in the third minute when captain Vincent Wanga headed David Odoyo’s set-piece delivery narrowly over the crossbar.

Elly Owande then threatened with a powerful effort that missed the target before Nyakwaka and Clinton Okoth tested Mombasa’s defensive organisation.

The visitors also had opportunities of their own. Rashid Moyo headed over from Rodgers Oporia’s delivery, while Jack Watee and Moyo continued to look for openings as Mombasa grew into the contest.

Migori eventually found the breakthrough two minutes before the interval after being awarded a penalty for handball. Nyakwaka took responsibility and converted confidently, sending goalkeeper Mustapha Oduor the wrong way.

The forward nearly doubled his tally early in the second half, but his effort from a tight angle struck the post. Oduor subsequently made important saves to deny Geoffrey Odira and Nyakwaka as the hosts searched for a second goal.

That goal arrived five minutes from time. Dennis Oguta released Christopher Koloti, who cut the ball back for Ologi to finish and put the outcome beyond doubt.

The victory lifted Migori to six points, rewarding their persistence after a series of draws.
