Karauri’s Big Announcement Backfires as ODM Supporters Heckle Him Over Nairobi Governor Bid
Kasarani Member of Parliament Ronald Karauri found himself facing a hostile reception after announcing his intention to contest the Nairobi gubernatorial seat in the 2027 General Election.
Karauri, who is also the co-founder and CEO of SportPesa, was heckled by sections of the crowd while addressing ODM supporters during a rally held at Jacaranda Grounds in Embakasi East, Nairobi, on Saturday, October 31.
The rally, which brought together several ODM leaders and supporters dressed in the party’s orange colours, was organised to celebrate what speakers described as the month of the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
During his address, Karauri acknowledged Raila’s influence on his political journey, saying the former prime minister played a significant role in introducing him to politics.
He also expressed gratitude for the reception he had received since joining ODM, before declaring his interest in succeeding Johnson Sakaja as Nairobi governor.
“Baba is the one who introduced me to politics, and I am happy for the way you welcomed me into the ODM party. Come 2027, we shall be together in this party, and I am seeking the position of governor here in Nairobi,” Karauri stated.
However, his announcement was met with loud heckling and chants from sections of the audience, forcing him to cut short his remarks.
The hostility directed at Karauri was not the only incident that disrupted the gathering.
The rally later descended into chaos after suspected goons stormed the venue, interrupting proceedings and forcing several political leaders to flee for their safety.
The incident highlighted growing tensions within ODM as the party prepares for the 2027 General Election amid internal political divisions.
Meanwhile, Kisii Governor and ODM deputy party leader Simba Arati held a meeting with youths representing all 17 ODM branches in Nairobi at Jamhuri Grounds.
The meeting was part of the party’s grassroots mobilisation efforts as it seeks to strengthen its political presence in the capital ahead of the upcoming elections.
