“It is Part of Politics” SC Ahmednasir Blast Govt Leaders Complaining After Kalonzo Being Heckled
Senior Counsel Ahmednasir Abdullahi has weighed in on the controversy surrounding the heckling of Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka during the Linda Mwananchi Movement event, offering a different perspective from government leaders who condemned the incident.
The incident occurred during a political gathering attended by several opposition leaders, including Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and DAP-Kenya leader Eugene Wamalwa.
Kalonzo found himself at the centre of attention after sections of the crowd interrupted his address with chants supporting Sifuna’s presidential ambitions ahead of the 2027 General Election.
The former Vice President had raised concerns about the process of identifying the opposition’s presidential candidate, insisting that consultations and established party procedures should be respected.
His remarks appeared to generate mixed reactions from the audience, with some attendees expressing dissatisfaction through chants that disrupted his speech.
The incident quickly attracted political attention, particularly after several government leaders came out to defend Kalonzo and question the treatment he received at a gathering organised by fellow opposition politicians.
Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen was among those who reacted, condemning the heckling and suggesting that Kalonzo should consider working with President William Ruto.
However, Ahmednasir’s intervention introduced another dimension to the discussion. The senior lawyer described such incidents as part of the political environment, arguing that politicians should understand the nature of political competition and public reactions.
His remarks came amid growing exchanges between government and opposition figures over whether the incident reflected divisions within the opposition.
Meanwhile, Sifuna appealed to the crowd to respect Kalonzo and allow him to address the gathering, seeking to calm tensions during the event.
The Wiper leader has continued to express interest in the presidency, maintaining that he is prepared to participate in consultations aimed at determining the opposition’s candidate.
The developments have once again exposed the challenges facing opposition leaders as they attempt to build a common political platform ahead of the 2027 elections.
With government leaders continuing to comment on the incident, Ahmednasir’s position has added to the debate over political competition, respect and freedom of expression at public gatherings.
