Hope As Woman Communicates With Her Daughter Buried Inside Collapsed Eastleigh Building For 9 Days

A mother searching desperately for her missing daughter following the collapse of an 18-storey building in Eastleigh, Nairobi, has received a possible breakthrough after the young woman’s phone became reachable following eight days of silence.

Jude Rose Wanjiru, who travelled from Kangema in Murang’a County, has spent nine days at the disaster scene hoping to find her 22-year-old daughter, Aurelia Wanjiku, alive.

The mother has endured an agonising wait as rescue teams continue clearing debris from the collapsed building along 9th Street in Eastleigh.

Her hopes were renewed on Saturday morning when Aurelia’s sister attempted to call her Airtel number and discovered that it was ringing. Someone eventually answered, although communication was difficult.

“Her Safaricom line was not going through, and I tried her Airtel line and she even picked up, so I could hear her but it’s like she could not hear us,” Wanjiru said.

The family immediately reported the development to government officials overseeing the rescue operation. The information was subsequently forwarded to detectives, who are working to establish the phone’s location and determine whether it could lead rescuers to the missing woman.

Wanjiru’s search has been emotionally draining, with the mother revealing that she has struggled to eat as uncertainty over her daughter’s whereabouts continues.

At one point, the family received information that a woman’s body had been recovered from the rubble. They rushed to the City Mortuary but established that the deceased was not Aurelia.

Meanwhile, rescue operations have entered a critical stage, with authorities reporting that approximately 90 per cent of the debris has been cleared.

Sixteen people are still unaccounted for, with rescuers concentrating on the remaining section believed to contain those trapped inside the building.

Families waiting at the scene have continued appealing for faster operations as anxiety grows over the fate of their missing relatives.

For Wanjiru, the brief phone connection has provided a fresh reason to believe that her daughter could still be alive as rescue teams intensify their efforts.
