Kenya Railways starts SGR car transport service with 700 cars each month.

Using the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR), Kenya Railways Corporation has unveiled a fresh car transit service that offers importers, car dealers, and drivers another means of moving cars between Mombasa and Nairobi.

After the first batch of 24 cars was effectively moved from Mombasa to the Nairobi Inland Container Depot on October 31, 2026, the service was formally started.

Before launching the service to the market, Kenya Railways Managing Director Philip Mainga said the company had been running tests since last year.

Specialised freight wagons with a capacity of around six cars per wagon move the cars. The first significant commercial collaboration with vehicle dealer Autobarn East Africa, the railway operator aims around 700 cars monthly.

Kenya Railways estimates that travel between Mombasa and Nairobi takes eight to nine hours, so providing another choice to road travel that can take more than a day.

The service is likely to draw clearing agents, distributors, vehicle importers, and companies that routinely shuttle vehicles between Nairobi and the Coast.

Subject to the service arrangements, individual drivers and tourists will also be able to carry their own cars by rail between Nairobi, Mombasa, and Naivasha.

The railway company claims the project would give consumers a more practical choice while helping to lower the volume of cars moved over great distances on roads.

Additionally aiming vehicle dealers in nearby nations Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, Tanzania, and South Sudan, Kenya Railways is targeting.

This development is still another step toward increasing SGR freight traffic outside of typical passenger and container movements.
