If one drug could cure so many diseases, its maker would be a trillionaire – Dr. Sompa

Founder and CEO of Dinah-Gayle Medical Clinic, Dr. Sompa Otabil-Nelson, has questioned claims surrounding herbal products advertised as treatments for several unrelated illnesses, arguing that such promises do not make medical sense.

The Family Medicine Specialist raised concerns about products promoted as capable of shrinking fibroids, treating malaria and curing cancer, pointing out that the conditions involve different disease processes.

Speaking on the Toast programme on GHOne TV monitored by MyNewsGh, she challenged the idea that a single herbal preparation could effectively treat such a wide range of illnesses.

“One of the issues that I think I have concern about is how does one drug shrink your fibroid, deal with someone’s malaria? Do you cure cancer, treat malaria? When they are all different disease processes, how is that possible?” she asked.

Dr. Sompa argued that if one product could genuinely treat so many different diseases, its maker would have achieved extraordinary commercial success.

“If that was it, that person would be a trillionaire by now because you’ve cured so many diseases. So if you look, if you think about it logically, it doesn’t make sense for one thing to be able to do that,” she said.

She also questioned the assumption that products carrying Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) numbers have necessarily undergone the kind of regulatory assessment and scientific evaluation that consumers might expect.

According to her, there is limited research data on many supplements and herbal products, making it difficult to establish what they contain and what they can safely treat.

“A lot of these supplements and things that we have, even though they have FDA numbers, they are not FDA regulated. So there is not much data to be able to show us what are these things?” she stated.
