Dràma in Kabiria as Building Housing Supermarket Shows Signs of Imminent Collapse
Emergency response teams and police officers have rushed to Kwa Maji in Kabiria, Nairobi, after a multi-storey building developed serious structural problems, raising fears that it could collapse.
The building, which houses several businesses, including a supermarket on the ground floor, as well as residential apartments on the upper floors, reportedly developed visible cracks and other signs of structural distress.
The situation sparked panic among residents and traders, who alerted authorities after noticing the worrying changes in the structure. Emergency personnel quickly arrived at the scene to assess the situation and prevent possible loss of life.
Rescue teams have since cordoned off the affected area as structural engineers examine the building to establish the extent of the damage and determine whether it is at risk of collapsing.
Police officers are also controlling movement around the scene and directing residents, business owners and passers-by away from the potentially dangerous structure.
People living and operating businesses in neighbouring buildings have been urged to remain alert and comply with any safety instructions issued by authorities as investigations continue.
The incident has caused concern among residents of Kabiria, a densely populated neighbourhood in Nairobi’s Dagoretti area, where construction has expanded significantly in recent years.
The affected building is understood to accommodate both families and businesses, making the situation particularly worrying for those who depend on the premises for their homes and livelihoods.
However, authorities have yet to establish what caused the structural failure. It also remains unclear whether anyone was inside the building when the cracks were discovered or whether any injuries have been reported.
Engineers are expected to provide further guidance on whether the structure can be stabilised through repairs or will require demolition to avert a possible disaster.
For now, emergency teams remain at the scene as authorities work to secure the area and protect residents and traders from potential danger.
