Cracks in Jubilee as Kioni Takes Aim at Matiang’i Over Opposition Campaign Strategy

Fresh divisions have emerged within the Jubilee political camp after Deputy Party Leader Jeremiah Kioni publicly questioned former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i’s approach to mobilising support ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Speaking during a podcast interview aired on Sunday, November 1, 2026, Kioni argued that opposition leaders were spending too much time promoting political slogans instead of presenting workable solutions to challenges affecting ordinary Kenyans.

He claimed Matiang’i had an opportunity to travel across the country, engage voters and explain his agenda before joining other politicians in what he described as a political choir.

Kioni suggested that rally chants surrounding one-term politics, political families and succession debates were diverting attention from issues that directly affect households.

He pointed to the rising cost of living, difficulties parents face in paying school fees and the financial burden confronting families with patients receiving intensive care treatment.

According to him, Kenyans following political developments from their homes were more interested in understanding how prospective leaders intended to improve their livelihoods than listening to entertaining campaign rhetoric.

The Jubilee deputy leader maintained that political leaders needed to demonstrate how their proposed policies would address economic hardship, strengthen healthcare and improve access to education.

Despite his reservations about Matiang’i’s campaign messaging, Kioni expressed willingness to support a united opposition arrangement.

He revealed that he had offered himself to the wider political team and would accept whichever candidate emerged through consultations.

Kioni insisted that opposition leaders needed to settle on one presidential contender and work together, adding that the chosen candidate’s weaknesses could be addressed through collective support.

His remarks introduce another debate within the opposition over leadership, messaging and the strategy needed before the 2027 contest.
