2026 U17 WWC: Japan knock out Black Maidens in quarters
According to report by Myjoyonline on Sunday 1, November 2026, Ghana’s Black Maidens have been eliminated from the ongoing FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup following a narrow 1-0 defeat to Japan in the quarterfinals of the competition on Sunday afternoon.
The defeat brings an end to the team’s campaign in Rabat, Morocco, after they failed to overcome a determined Japanese side that dominated large periods of the encounter.
Japan secured the crucial victory through Nanami Kurita, who scored the only goal of the match to send her country into the semifinals and end Ghana’s hopes of progressing further in the tournament.
Head coach Nana Joe Adarkwa made two changes to his starting lineup ahead of the quarterfinal clash, handing starting opportunities to Belinda Kpentey and Mavis Koah as he sought to strengthen his side for the important encounter.
However, the Black Maidens struggled to find their rhythm from the opening minutes, with Japan taking control of proceedings and putting considerable pressure on Ghana’s defence.
The Ghanaian youngsters found it difficult to create clear-cut scoring opportunities during the first half and managed just one attempt at goal. Despite their dominance, Japan were also unable to convert their chances, leaving both teams level at the break.
The game eventually came to life after the restart when Kurita broke the deadlock, finding the back of the net to give Japan a deserved advantage.
Following the goal, the Black Maidens attempted to respond and showed greater urgency as they searched for an equaliser. However, their efforts were not enough to break down Japan’s organised defence.
Japan remained disciplined until the final whistle, protecting their narrow lead to secure a 1-0 victory and book their place in the last four.
For Ghana, the result represents another disappointing quarterfinal exit from the U-17 Women’s World Cup, as the young national team falls short of its ambition to advance further in the competition.
Although the Black Maidens will be disappointed with the outcome, their participation in the tournament provides valuable international experience for the young players as they look ahead to future competitions.
Japan, meanwhile, will turn their attention to the semifinals as they continue their quest for the U-17 Women’s World Cup title.
