272 Ghanaians Recruited, 55 Dead: What Putin Has Now Agreed to Do After Mahama’s Intervention
According to a report by GhanaWeb on Sunday November 1, 2026, Russian President Vladimir Putin has agreed to end the recruitment of Ghanaian nationals to participate in the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine following concerns raised by Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama.
Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa disclosed the development after diplomatic discussions between the two countries over reports of Ghanaians being recruited to fight in the conflict.
The minister announced the agreement following a meeting between President Mahama and Putin on October 30, 2026, on the sidelines of the recently concluded Russia-Africa Summit.
In a social media post on Saturday, October 31, Ablakwa said the Russian president had committed to preventing Ghanaian nationals from joining the war under any circumstances.
The arrangement covers both irregular recruitment practices and voluntary enlistment.
The agreement comes amid growing concerns about Ghanaian citizens allegedly being deceived into travelling to Russia with promises of lucrative employment before being deployed to the battlefield.
In July 2026, Ablakwa revealed that approximately 272 Ghanaians had reportedly been recruited into the conflict through fraudulent foreign employment arrangements.
At the time, reports indicated that 55 Ghanaian nationals had lost their lives, while two others were being held as prisoners of war.
