100 Ghanaian German teachers to graduate from UEW next year – German Deputy Ambassador

More than 100 Ghanaian teachers studying the German language are expected to graduate from the University of Education, Winneba (UEW) next year, the Deputy German Ambassador, Sarah Pfaffernoschke, has said.

Speaking at German Language Day at the German International School Accra (GISA) on October 31, 2026, she said the group would be the first cohort of its kind.

“There, next year, the first cohort of more than 100 Ghanaian German language teachers is expected to graduate,” she said.

She added that every new German teacher brings the language to more students, opens up new opportunities and helps build lasting connections between Germany and Ghana.

Ms Pfaffernoschke said Germany and Ghana share an interest in giving more young Ghanaians access to German language education. She said the two countries, together with Ghanaian partners, are building a network for the language across Ghana.

It runs from the Goethe-Institut in Accra, through the German language centres in Kumasi, to UEW.

The event also saw GISA and UEW sign a cooperation agreement which sets up closer collaboration between the school and the university. Under it, UEW students will make planned classroom observation visits to see how German is taught.

“Learning a language is not just about communicating, it’s about connecting,” Ms Pfaffernoschke said.

She told the students that German could open doors to friendships, to a different culture and possibly to study, vocational training or work in Germany.

According to her, Germany offers opportunities in healthcare, engineering, skilled trades, technology and research, and has a growing need for qualified professionals. She said language is also what lets a person feel at home in a country, understand people and become part of a community.
