Yvonne Okwara’s Post-Citizen TV Move Has Kenyans Locked In, Here’s Why

Veteran journalist Yvonne Okwara is wasting no time settling into life after Citizen TV.

She launched her YouTube channel and teased an exclusive sit-down with Vincent, a Kenyan survivor of the Russia-Ukraine War, in a clip that cut off dramatically just as he stepped into her vehicle, sending viewers straight to the full video.

Since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, hundreds of young Kenyan men have allegedly been lured to the conflict zone under false pretences, promised civilian jobs paying as much as KSh 300,000 plus sign-on bonuses, only to be forced into signing military contracts.

“Today I got to meet somebody who is not just a statistic but is the real embodiment of a tough situation. His name is Vincent, and you will understand why I am inspired by his story,” Yvonne said in the teaser.

In her caption, she placed the interview against the many desperate appeals from Kenyan families searching for missing sons, brothers and husbands.

“I have done many interviews on television, but none has been as compelling as this one… But how many made it out? For the first time, we hear the story of a conscript who survived,” she wrote.

The full interview explores how Vincent was deceived into travelling to Russia, what he experienced on the ground and, crucially, how he escaped.

The teaser lit up her comments. “I am locked in,” one follower declared, while others showered her with admiration and well wishes.

Her new chapter comes with a reported new role at Shuga Global, with industry comparisons estimating her monthly pay at between KSh 850,000 and KSh 1.2 million, though her actual earnings have not been disclosed.

The question hanging over it all: if hundreds went to that war and Vincent is the first survivor to speak, how many more stories like his are still out there?
