Why Ferdinand Omanyala Says the New Toyota Hilux Is Just Like Him
Africa’s fastest man, Ferdinand Omanyala, was the star guest as Toyota launched the ninth-generation Hilux G9 in Nairobi on Thursday, October 29.
The sprint champion, a Toyota brand ambassador, drew a line between his track career and the truck. “As an athlete, I understand the importance of strength, resilience, reliability, and performance. These are qualities that define my journey on the track, and they are also qualities that Toyota represents,” he said.
The Hilux G9 arrives in Kenya as a 2.8-litre Double Cab automatic in two trims. The Mid variant goes for KSh 7.8 million, while the High specification is priced at KSh 10.8 million.
Both run Toyota’s 2.8-litre 1GD turbo diesel engine delivering 150kW and 500Nm of torque through a six-speed automatic gearbox, with Eco, Normal and Sport driving modes.
Off-road credentials include a four-wheel-drive system, Multi-Terrain Select, rear differential lock and Downhill Assist Control. Ground clearance sits at 312mm, payload is roughly one tonne and towing capacity is 3,500kg. Toyota puts fuel consumption at around 12km per litre from the 80-litre tank.
Inside, the Mid model gets an eight-inch touchscreen, wireless charging, cruise control and an eight-speaker audio system. The High variant steps up to a 12.3-inch display, leather seats, a nine-speaker premium system, an electrically adjustable driver’s seat and a 360-degree camera.
Both trims come with dual-zone climate control, tyre-pressure monitoring, an electric parking brake and power-folding mirrors.
