Pirates Claim Soweto Derby Bragging Rights As Chiefs Suffer Major Blow In Title Race

Orlando Pirates have secured a massive victory over their fiercest rivals, Kaizer Chiefs, after claiming a hard-fought 2-1 victory in the latest edition of the Soweto Derby at FNB Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The Buccaneers walked away with all three points in a highly anticipated Betway Premiership encounter, thanks to goals from Yanela Mbuthuma and Tshepang Moremi. The victory not only delivered bragging rights but also propelled Pirates to the top of the league standings.

Both teams entered the encounter knowing how much the result meant to their respective supporters. Beyond the traditional rivalry, the three points carried significant implications for the Premiership title race, particularly for Pirates, who were determined to maintain their impressive run of form.

The opening stages produced an entertaining contest, with both sides looking to establish control. Kaizer Chiefs had opportunities to take the lead, but Pirates eventually broke the deadlock through Mbuthuma in the 24th minute.

The striker found the back of the net after receiving a pass from Thapelo Mokobodi before his effort took a deflection off Thabo Moloisane and beat goalkeeper Brandon Petersen.

However, Amakhosi refused to surrender and found their equaliser through Pule Mmodi in the 30th minute. The Chiefs attacker capitalised on a costly mistake by Pirates goalkeeper Sipho Chaine, who failed to hold onto Mfundo Vilakazi’s delivery into the penalty area.

The two Soweto giants went into the half-time break level at 1-1, leaving everything to play for in the second half.

Pirates, however, returned with renewed determination and restored their advantage in the 55th minute. Mokobodi once again played a crucial role, breaking through the Chiefs defence before unselfishly setting up Moremi, who calmly finished from close range.

The goal proved decisive as the Buccaneers managed to protect their advantage despite attempts by Chiefs to find another equaliser.

Moremi nearly extended Pirates’ lead later in the match, while substitute Oswin Appollis also had a goal ruled out for offside, a decision that attracted attention during the closing stages.

Chiefs’ afternoon became even more difficult when defender Inacio Miguel received a second yellow card in stoppage time, leaving Amakhosi with 10 players.

The final whistle confirmed a memorable 2-1 victory for the Buccaneers, who continued their impressive league campaign with another important result.

According to the latest league standings following the derby, Pirates moved to 25 points from nine matches, opening a two-point advantage over Mamelodi Sundowns, although the Brazilians still had an opportunity to reclaim top spot later on Saturday.

For Kaizer Chiefs, the defeat represents a disappointing setback. Amakhosi remain on 14 points, 11 behind their biggest rivals, and will need a strong response in their upcoming fixtures.
