Thapelo Mokobodi Earns Special Praise From Ouaddou After Derby Display

Orlando Pirates midfielder Thapelo Mokobodi has received glowing praise from head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou following his outstanding performance in the 2-1 Soweto Derby victory over Kaizer Chiefs at FNB Stadium on Saturday, October 31, 2026.

The 23-year-old was one of the standout performers as the Buccaneers claimed bragging rights in the 186th edition of the famous rivalry. His contribution was particularly important because he played a direct role in both goals that secured the victory.

Pirates opened the scoring in the 24th minute when Mokobodi supplied the pass that allowed Yanela Mbuthuma to find the back of the net. Although Kaizer Chiefs restored parity through Pule Mmodi, the midfielder remained influential as the contest progressed.

The decisive moment came in the 55th minute. Mokobodi helped launch a quick attacking move before unselfishly setting up Tshepang Moremi, who finished the opportunity to give Pirates a 2-1 lead.

His two assists underlined his creativity and ability to influence important moments, particularly against a traditional rival in one of South African football’s biggest fixtures.

Mokobodi’s display also earned him the Man of the Match award, making his derby appearance a memorable milestone. It was especially significant given that he was making his first appearance in the fixture after joining Pirates from Stellenbosch ahead of the 2026/27 campaign.

Ouaddou has previously spoken positively about the midfielder’s qualities, describing him as a player with intelligence, energy and the ability to create opportunities for teammates or score goals.

The Pirates coach has now placed him among the country’s best midfielders, further highlighting the impression he has made since arriving at the club.

Mokobodi’s performance was also reflected in Flashscore’s player ratings, where he received an 8.4 score, the highest rating recorded for the match.

The victory strengthened Pirates’ position in the Betway Premiership title race, while Mokobodi’s contribution provided another indication of the influence he is developing in the team’s midfield.

For the young midfielder, earning individual recognition while helping Pirates defeat their biggest rivals was a significant achievement in his growing career.
