Kenya's largest referral hospital is looking almost unrecognisable. Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) has undergone a sweeping transformation, with photos circulating online revealing corridors and wards that bear little resemblance to the rundown facility that once drew public outrage.

Gerald Bitok shared the images that quickly spread across social media, showing the results of a KSh 102 million project funded by the Co-operative Bank of Kenya through the Co-operative Bank Foundation. The initiative reconstructed and fully equipped three orthopaedic wards at the hospital.
The official handover to the Ministry of Health and KNH management took place on Thursday, 29 October, marking the conclusion of six months of work under the KNH Adopt-a-Ward Initiative.

The photos paint a vivid picture of the overhaul. Long corridors now feature spotless marble-tiled floors, freshly painted white walls, wooden railings and modern sinks with fitted cabinets. Bright ceiling lights and glass-panel doors replace what were once dim, dated passageways.
Inside the orthopaedic wards, new beds fitted with traction frames for fracture patients sit on highly polished floors, complete with clean blue mattresses and cheerful Mickey Mouse privacy curtains.
The nurses' station is equally striking, boasting a curved wooden desk, black countertops, computers and patient waiting benches, all set against gleaming tiled floors.
The project delivered 96 orthopaedic beds for the refurbished wards, with additional contributions from partners including the Nakumatt Molo Fire Victims Fund, which supplied 40 electric beds. Each ward cost approximately KSh 30 million to refurbish.
Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale presided over the handover ceremony, which was also attended by KNH Board Chairman Abbas Gullet, Chief Executive Officer Dr Richard Lesiyampe and Co-op Bank Director Lydia Rono.

Kenyans who came across the photos online were full of praise, with many remarking that the facility now rivals private hospitals in terms of appearance and amenities.
We also highlighted facts about how Kenyatta National Hospital reunited an unidentified patient with his family after appealing for help on social media.
A woman recognised Duncan Daniel Mburu in the hospital’s post and quickly brought his relatives to his bedside. Their reunion showed how a simple online share can help reconnect a family with a loved one.
